Love a big breakfast? Hate big preps when your eyelids are still at half mast? Solved! And in a mighty tasty way. These Reheat-able Breakfast Calzones are hearty too, plump with chorizo, potatoes, onions, peppers & seasonings. The prep list may look scary long, but it’s basically cook the chorizo, then the veggies, stir in seasonings. Roll out store bought dough {or make from recipe provided}, fill and freeze. They reheat right from the freezer. Thinking, to make it even more of an eye opener, swap out the bells for jalapenos or habaneros.  From Food Network

Have you heard of Banoffee Pie? It’s sort of like banana cream gone wild. In the original English version there’s usually a biscuit base, but this prep calls for a graham cracker crust. Then it goes all caramel-y with a layer of dulce de leche that you make from sweetened condensed milk {or, guess you could just buy a comparable amount of dulce de leche}. Along with some cooling steps, then bananas, whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Btw, here’s another place where you would thank an offset spatula {mine from Amazon}.  From Tasty

Move over potatoes, there’s a new chick in town. More specifically, Hasselback Chicken. The classic technique delivers a mouthful of flavor, as the slots are filled with spinach & ricotta, topped with cheddar and paprika. One thing, you may want to add the cheese later in the process. A tip I learned for anything hasselback is to lay skewers or chop sticks on each side to insure you don’t cut all the way through.  From Tasty

Promise you won’t run when I mention . . . Chocolate Salami. This confection by Giada is a clever sendup on the deli fave, with buttery chocolate supplying the background and then nuts and crushed biscotti playing the “fat” roles. As a final touch, the whole shebang is rolled in powdered sugar. Yet one more dessert that also serves as a conversation piece.  From Food Network Kitchen

When Ixipixie, who posted this prep, calls it Hot Corn, you can believe that’s just what it is. And well beyond the warmth of being baked golden in the oven. That other kind of heat is contributed by a full 12 oz jar of jalapenos. Coming to the rescue, somewhat at least, is a lot of cream cheese and cheddar. The descrip says for this family it’s become “a must have for all holidays and special occasions.”  From AllRecipes

Here’s a sweet and festive way to start the day. Strawberry Banana Pancake Skewers. Colorful too, as the golden pancakes, bright strawberries and banana slices alternate from end to end. Do we even need to mention the possible shortcut – store  – bought mini pancakes.  From Tasty

The Kitchen’s Katie Lee’s love affair with veggies translates into some mighty fine dishes. Her Melting Potatoes, a case in point. The sear-then-roast process turns out bronzed beauties ready to pizzazz up any plate. They cook in a seasoned buttery sauce that is then poured over them for the perfect finishing touch.  From Food Network

Note right upfront that this recipe for Chicken Tinga with Bacony Black Beans does need your email. Could be worth it because this is one great collection of ingredients. Or . . . you could use my shortcut – start with slightly crisped corn tortillas, top with a can of black beans mixed with 3 slices ccooked crumbled bacon and 1 t ea onion powder and cumin. Next add about 1 cup cooked shredded chicken into a can of rotel mixed with 2 T chili powder, 1 t onion powder, 1/2 t garlic powder and enough V-8 to create a nice texture. Top the hot mixtures with chopped onion, cilantro, and crumbled queso.  From Bon Appetit

What we have here is a dyi version of a well known candy bar. Called Chocolate Coconut Bars, they are quite easy to make and taste fabulous. Btw if the measures show in metric, note you can click a button to convert.  I don’t think I’ve seen this site before, but with recipes like this, including other dyi’s, it certainly is worth checking out.  From Kitchen Stories

Let us be perfectly clear. There is nothing wrong with jarred apple sauce. And yet there is something so comforting about a homemade version, likely helped along by the wonderful aroma. Now what if it were fast and easy too? With Alton Brown’s 10-Minute Apple Sauce – it is! Truth be told there is a little bit going on before and after the 10, but all in all still a pretty zippy technique.  From Food Network

Joke from Alexa – what’s black and white and red all over. A pilgrim covered in cranberry sauce. {hey don’t blame the messenger}

Kitchen Talk – Pssssst, Pistou. What a wonderful little find in the NYT Bread & Soup Cookbook we mentioned in the 10.01.21 Salon. It says a tablespoon of this distinctive paste will enliven almost any soup {and more, as with pesto}. To make it, boil 4 slices of bacon in a cup of water for 3 min, drain, chop. Blend with 2 egg yolks, 2 cloves garlic & 1 t dried basil until all ingredients are pureed. Pour into a bowl, stir in 6T on Parmesan & 1 t olive oil. Done.     So looking at the tasty stuff in Pistou, I started thinking it could morph into other apps. Here, I used already-fried bacon, left out the eggs, added enough extra oil until it to started to hold together, and pressed it onto hot toast.    Fancy some fancy butter? Take a look at this taste test from MyRecipes.

Shopping Finds – One of the best toys/tools ever, and yay inexpensive too. As you can see here, an offset spatula is just what is sounds like, zagged down from the handle so you can easily smooth out, e.g., tomato sauce, cheese mixtures, cake batter, pie fillings, and more and more. At your market or on Amazon.      So, I have an 8 oz pkg of xanthan gum to make King Arthur flour’s recipe for gluten free bread, but that needs only 1 1/4 t. What to do with the rest? Google has some great ideas regarding thickening gravy, sauces, salad dressings and more. The bread recipe is on that page too. Amazon just in case you can’t find it in the store. I bought the Amazon’s Choice one, shown.

This week’s featured CS-designed, Zazzle-crafted item – You know, it’s a sad state of affairs when it seems every year the interactions across the aisle in DC become ever more coarse. It doesn’t have to be this way, does it? Yes, it is my stuff, but more than the sale I hope in some small way we can send the message that we’d like better manners, more civility. You can see seven different ways to say “Make America Decent Again” right here on this CS page.

  Featured Recipes

Best Grilled Cheese Ever

If you look on Google you’ll see that others also stake this claim to fame. This one may be among those that deliver. Ree Drummond includes roasted peppers, red onion, tomato and two kinds of cheese, all sparked up with Dijon. The recipe calls for just rye but the pic shows the more interesting marble rye {am I the only one picturing a white haired lady running like the dickens}.  From Food Network

Chicken-Tortilla Casserole

Love chicken tortilla soup? This prep promises to simulate that taste, but put it on a plate . . . with lots of cheese. With an ingredient list that also includes diced tomatoes & chilies, beans & corn, and Mexi flavors, it sure does sound tasty. And you know what – it is! Easy too, as you simply combine, cover with jack cheese {we added cheddar too}, and bake until the top is golden brown, and then garnish each serving.  From Southern Living

Caramelized Banana Bourbon Bread Pudding

Every word in that title is a winner. But wait, there’s more. Chocolate, cream, spices, and not one but two kinds of bread. The last line of the directions reads like a promise: “The bread pudding should have a nice caramelized crust and a moist (not wet or dry) interior.”  From Tastemade

Sunny’s Red Beans & Rice

This is almost always a full flavored dish, but the one Sunny Anderson made on tv just looked so extra appealing, I had to try it myself. May have been influenced by Katie Lee’s reaction, clearly smitten with the New Orleans treat that she called so comforting. What may well be the ruling ingredient here is the smoked ham hock. Now this may be a culinary violation but I piled some of the leftovers on cheese grits. Southern meets Southern!  On Food Network

Best Cookie Recipes

Well likely makes you wanna look. Once you look, likely wanna make. And maybe more than once, or as the title on the page says, cookies to “put on repeat.” Here are a few that caught my eye – butter cookies with clove sugar, candy cookies, butterscotch chocolate sandwich cookies, chocolate chip cookie in a mug, peanut butter breakfast cookies.  From Food & Wine

   Cocktail Hour Buzz

Sundowner snacks, drinks, talk – whether for a crew, or for two, or just for you

Nice to see that Food & Wine doesn’t mind crashing through its titular walls. Well, to be fair, there is food involved – pickles to be exact. What makes a headline is that these pickles seem to be even more definitively pickled. And that’s because they are gin-flavored. No real gin, but all the botanicals of Hendrick’s Gin is right there in the jar. This ginny pickle would be a great conversation piece for the snack table {but maybe stop short of plopping it in the tini}.

Truth be told I’m pretty much a purist when it comes to deviled eggs, but the gussied up ones that we featured in last week’s Salon looked pretty darn good. And you know what, they are!. Given the number of eggs, I decided a bit more bacon wouldn’t hurt, with even more for garnish. These cheddar bacon deviled eggs are from AllRecipes.

Want to use fresh coconut water in your drinks? Want to serve your drinks in coconut shells? The first trick is getting the darn thing open. It was actually Alexa {see you next week!} who directed us to Wikihow for these 3 ways to open a coconut.

Two-Ingredient Chocolate Souffle  Chocolate hazelnut spread and eggs. That’s it. Whisk, whisk, whip, bake, done. I don’t know how long this has been around but I found dark chocolate hazelnut spread and plan to us that here, because this is definitely going on the to-make list.  From Tasty

Bacon Cheddar Deviled Eggs  Truth be told I’m pretty much a purist when it comes to deviled eggs, but these gussied up ones look good and would make a nice addition to the snack table. The ingredients are right there in the title, joined by the usual suspects. In the demo, I wonder if the trouble with peeling might be because they weren’t immediate covered with cold water to stop the cooking.  From AllRecipes

French Onion Frittata  This is soup for breakfast in the best possible way. The star of the show for sure is the golden panful of slowly caramelized onions. The bread here is not the soaky slice as in soup but rather buttery croutons that go right into the mix. Gruyere too and a good hit of Dijon.  From thekitchn

♦  Beef Braciole I’ve been wanting to try this dish for quite a while, and it took just at glance at this particular recipe to say, it’s time. The glorious mix of flavors in the filling is all wrapped up in thin slices of beef that simmer to fall-apart tenderness.  From Tastemade

Notes: All puree worked just fine. Though they aren’t shown as “divided,” be aware that the parsley is used 3 places, the garlic, raisins and pine nuts 2 places. I put about 3/4 of the cheese inside the rolls. Really like the sauce.

Garlic-Herb Roasted Potatoes  The title actually starts out with “Easily the best . . .” and they may be right. What’s interesting is that the fresh herbs & garlic are cooked into the oil and then strained out, so when the taters emerge from the 450 oven {crispy, thank you} they aren’t dotted with burnt bits. As a bonus you get to release some aggressions in the process.  From Tasty

Recently, in reference to wine pairing, Alexa mentioned “bridge foods” and cited as examples butter, cream, toasted nuts, mushrooms, tarragon, bacon and corn specifically for chardonnay – turns out it means adding something to your dish that will make it more compatible with the flavor notes of the wine you’re serving – interesting, especially since it means in this case the wine is influencing food decisions rather than vice versa

      Let’s Chat

Kitchen Talk – Dennis Weaver at Prepared Pantry, where all your baking shortcut dreams come true, notes in his recent newsletter that he uses cream cheese as a stabilizer for whipped cream, making it “taste like cheesecake.” He starts with softened cream cheese, whips in the sugar till smooth, then the heavy cream.      Did you know this? If a recipe for the air fryer calls for treating the food with oil spray, it really means oil spray, not cooking spray. Apparently the aerosol agents in the latter can damage the coating on the basket. I found it at my market, but of course Amazon has it too, and in a number of different varieties.

♦  ♦  ♦

Shopping Finds –  The tale that unfolds is foreshadowed in “The Coincidence of Coconut Cake” by Amy Reichert. The title confection indeed is the catalyst in two sets of crossed paths – chef & boyfriend, chef & food critic – potentially closing one door and opening another. As with most romantic journeys, fictional and otherwise, there is a bump in the terrain but this one is more like a volcano, and that makes us gobble up the pages, anticipating that pivotal moment when it will inevitably erupt. It’s 4 1/2 stars on Amazon, multiple formats.       So in an episode of DDD on Food Network, an ingredient called tare was used. Eh? Turns out it’s a flavor-packed Asian sauce with multiple applications. Did not find it in local stores. Make your own? Google. Shortcut? Amazon.

This week’s featured CS-designed, Zazzle-crafted item – Here’s another of our “o’clock” designs – tee shirts & mugs for chocolate lovers. As everyone in this elite group knows, any point from 12 to 12 and round the clock again is just the right time for chocolate. Click either image {the square for the tee} to go right to its Zazzle page, or view all of the designs on our tee page & mug page right here on CS.

  Featured Recipes

   Slow Cooker Pot Roast

This just seems like a dish slow cookers were made for. Potatoes, carrots and onions cook right along with the roast while a splash of wooster adds its own layer of flavor, all joined in the last hour of cooking by some fresh herbs. The directions call for shredding rather than slicing, but guessing the roast ends up so fall-apart that would probably be the only option.  From Tasty

   Bridge Mix Bars

Whether you’re playing bridge or other card or board games, watching tv, working on your laptop, whatever, this makes the candy more handy. All the usual suspects are there with two kinds of melty chocolate taking care of biz by binding them together and then topping them off.  From Food Network

Preps for Cheddar Lovers

They had me at the first one, cheddar scallion biscuits, with a bonus in the form of baking the biscuits on top of a whole bunch more cheddar, creating a frico effect. But it does go on, to other breads, burger, soups, Mex dishes, 10 in all. From Food & Wine

  Apple Buttermilk Loaves

The richness of buttermilk paired with the natural sweetness of Golden Delicious apples, further boosted by brown sugar, yields this delectable looking loaf. Nuts and vanilla make their tasty contributions too, along with the unexpected tang of grated orange peel. This has holiday written all over it, but no need to wait to make the first one.  From Washington Apple Commission  {also source of the beautiful photo, url will say bestapples}

“Casseroles are comfort food at its best”

And here’s a whole bunch of them just waiting to be invited eyour kitchen. Among the choices, Enchilada deep dishes & other Mex, Lasagnas & other Italian faves, Cajun & Creole specialties, chicken & biscuit cobbler, Tamale pie mix-up, Sloppy Joes skipping the bun and going deep dish with some mac, side dishes too. From Southern Living.

   Cocktail Hour Buzz

Sundowner snacks, drinks, talk – whether for a crew, or for two, or just for you

This zingy snack can lead more than one life. In a med size bowl, beat 4 eggs, then add 2 slices crisp crumbled bacon, 1/3 cup pepperoncini coarsely chopped, 3/4 c shredded cheddar, 1/4 c shredded parm. Bake 375 until set, about 15 min. Sprinkle with parsley and cut into squares. Revisit sautéed in butter for breakfast, or joined by veggies for lunch or brunch.

Thanks to Food and Wine for gathering these “22 Fall Cocktails to Try This Season.” And they sure do look and sound good. Such possible household staples as hard cider, apple brandy, honey, pears, figs, brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves pour autumn right into your glass.

♦  You could actually set this up like a caffeinated version of a bloody mary bar. All you need is a full urn, some cream, and the spirits that are front and center in these “7 Delicious Ways to Spike Your Coffee.” Also from Food & Wine.

Tap into some of this culinary bounty that is an everyday part of Amazon Echo’s offerings – always CS-style recipes, sometimes tips and tidbits too

♦  Easy General Tso’s Chicken  Well the ingredient list is a bit long {that can be a good thing when it’s good stuff}, but it’s just 5 steps and a projected prep time of 22 min. Some of the reviewers disputed that time but in total gave this dish 4 stars {4 1/2 on the Alexa page}. Many noted better than take-out and it may well be the charred green beans that can take a bow for that.  From Epicurious

Easy Apple Fritter Rings  Somebody else is tempting us with that adjective. This time it’s for a nice side dish or snack, which lives up to “easy” with a batter of just ginger ale & flour. There’s no amount given for the flour but this somewhat similar recipe for shrimp & fish, which also looks darn good from Rosemarie’s Kitchen, might suggest about a cup for the apple prep. Good starting point, anyway, and according to one of the comments you want a thin batter. From Tasty

Alexa tip – apples will keep at room temp for a short time, but for longer storage place in a perforated plastic bag, sprinkle with water and then into the coldest area of the fridge

♦  Bistro-Style Short Ribs  Just the briefest glance at what goes into the braising liquid will tell you everything you need to know about how deeply flavored those ribs are going to be. If you don’t have either of the two suggested appliances for browning the meat, I’m thinking you could use the same Dutch Oven they will eventually cook in. This recipe is credited to Tyler Florence, whom I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and can verify he is every bit as personable and charming as he seems.  From Food Network

♦  Carrot Cake Oatmeal  In our 08.06.21 Salon we mentioned German chocolate cake flavors to spruce up oatmeal. Now Alexa has popped up this cakey idea too. And yep, all that confection’s signature stuff is in there. Btw, if you google this recipe you’ll see not only some variations, but as well a do-si-do, which is to say carrot cake made with oatmeal. I’m going to stay with this recipe though because it just looks so good.  From Tasty

Chocolate Semifreddo  As the name telegraphs and CS-ers probably know, a semifreddo is “half frozen,” and emerges from the freezer somewhat soft. This one is helped along that path by a warm chocolate glaze. It’s quite the festive dessert.  From Tastemade

Loaded Vegetarian Nachos   Show of hands for renaming these Fiesta Nachos, because just look at that celebration of colors, flavors and textures all on one plate. More ingredients than we usually feature but so worth it and you actually could if you want limit the toppings. One shortcut that I used was canned lentils, still stirring in all the seasonings. From Tasty.

♦  Eggs in a Cloud   The same folks bring us a prep that is pure fun. And, oh yeah, there’s bacon in there too, plus chives if you like, mixed into the whipped whites, baked for 3 min to emerge with golden crests. Then the yolks are plopped into these nests, a bit more baking and out comes a whimsical breakfast. A big bonus is the wacky hack you’ll see in the demo for separating out the yolks. From Tasty.

Chili Relleno Casserole   The creator of this prep calls the dish very easy to prepare and loaded with flavor. Reviewers agree, giving it 4+ stars. It starts with canned whole green chile peppers that are stuffed with both jack and cheddar, treated to a pour-over of eggs, evaporated milk and flour, then baked. The recipe calls for topping with canned tomato sauce, but I’m thinking taco sauce could be interesting. From AllRecipes.

Mini Cheesecakes with Melty Chocolate and Strawberry Hearts   Make any day Valentine’s Day with a dessert that’s as simple as it is elegant. Decadence checks in too with its buttery graham cracker crust, rich filling, and perfect toppings. Note that you want to make them a day ahead to then decorate them after an overnight stay in the fridge. Credited to Christina Lane at Food Network Kitchen

Kitchen Talk –  In our 08.06.21 Salon we brought you a big list of Fresh Summer Appetizers from MyRecipes, and made and displayed the mini corn cakes with salmon and dill creme fraiche. But . . . with a few “companions” this snack easily upgrades to lunch or brunch. Here we invited in potato salad, tomatoes, pickles and olives. Mmmmm.        Vegan or vegetarian. Full-time? Some time? Give it time? Taste of Home has you covered with its Plant-Based Guide, mostly taking the mystery out of meat substitutes but with lots of links to other information.      If you kick diets to the curb, this is 100% good news. An Oreo Cafe opened last month in Rutherford NJ, where the iconic cookies go wild, and we can only assume more places in the country will also soon be serving countless calories-be-darned twists and turns.

Shopping Finds – Oh this is good, and a National Bestseller, “The School of Essential Ingredients.” And those ingredients are almost like characters, showing us not only how to appeal to all our senses but also, as the books says, to “live in our senses.” And as the human characters come to life one by one, we discover something else – the varying roles food and cooking and sharing may play within each person’s own individual world. A cover quote says it best: “A delicious, meltingly lovely hymn to food and friendship.” Multiple formats, 4 1/2 stars on Amazon.        Well how how handy is this. Frozen nuggets of crushed ginger, ready to be popped out as needed whenever the fresh stuff isn’t on hand. May not be a one-for-one sub for the actual root, but the fragrance as it melts into hot butter or oil tells you ginger is in the house.

Jean-Philippe on Instagram

Jean-Philippe Ruzé is a first class French guide and keto chef that I am honored to call friend. He regularly posts dishes on facebook that tempt you to reach right into the screen, and a recent one was such fun I wanted to bring it to you here. Chaffles! Cheese * Waffles = Chaffles. Here’s his recipe to make two: mix an egg with 50 g shredded mozzarella, salt, pepper and some parsley. Divide the preparation into 2 and bake in the waffle iron {Alexa says 50 g is just under 2 oz or about 1/2 cup}. He tops these with butter cooked eggs on a slice of emmental, sprinkled with a pinch of tarragon, salt & pepper You can also tap into his awesome preps at the Instagram link above. From Jean-Philippe

Chicken Tamale Pie

Anything that promises 5 min prep time is a magnet for us. And this recipe can probably live up to it with an ingredients list composed of cooked chicken, canned goods, jarred salsa and shredded cheese. Some nice spices go in there too, all topped with a broth-infused cornmeal crust. {Oops, that crust could stretch the prep time by a couple of minutes.} I’m also thinking this could be good in large individual ramekins. From Food Network

Slow Cooker Pineapple Habanero Pulled Chicken

Those same folks check in with another chicken prep, this one though considerably higher on the “thermometer.” And in case the 1-2 habaneros don’t tingle your tongue enough, there’s also black pepper and hot sauce in the mix. Thank your culinary stars for the pineapple, sour cream and lime juice. Lots of other good stuff in {and on} there too. From Food Network.

Tomato & Bacon Flatbread with Greens

Well this is quite the colorful plate-ful. Ready-made pizza dough means an easy start and the rest moves along pretty smoothly too. A super flavorful vinaigrette seasons the dough and then waits in the wings while the flatbread goes through an initial baking and then back in the oven with the tomatoes, bacon and cheese. Then the mixed baby greens take their turn with the remaining vinaigrette and Voila! ready to enjoy. From Real Simple

   Cocktail Hour Buzz

Sundowner snacks, drinks, talk – whether for a crew, or for two, or just for you

Topo Chico? Has this hot topic made its way to your doorstep yet? The short take is it’s a mineral water from Mexico, but the fact is it has quite a backstory. It involves a legend, history, geography, health claims, drink ideas, name origin, and hangover buzz, prevention as well as cure {alternatives just below}. Thanks to the WideOpenEats site {shows as secure} much of the story is all gathered in one place. They can be hard to find, so if you need to, can turn to good ol’ Amazon.

Yeah, we do tend to feature Yearwood creations here a bit, but mercy Trisha just does so much that’s fun, so much that’s tasty. The latter goes into overdrive in her Charleston Cheese Dip, where cheese x 3 meets bacon, scallions and a touch of spice, all creamy-ed up with mayo. I’m in!

A recent episode of “Chopped” on Food Network was themed on “hangry,” though a specific application which is to say hangovers. While as always ingredients abounded, both inside and outside the baskets, these are the ones that both contestants and judges seemed to think best address the issue: eggs, avocados, broth, cheese, noodles, hydrating fruits like watermelon, any kind of bread or crackers, anything creamy whether sweet or savory. For what it’s worth.

New Salon every Friday – c’mon in

CS friends, and help yourself to tasty resources

Hosted by Barbara J Nosek

  Let’s chat

Kitchen Talk – It was only a matter of time before I succumbed to the lure of the Oreo cake balls that were in Alexa’s Room in our 06.25.21’s Salon. They are so, so, easy to make and that might be the bad news because, mercy, they are rich and even luxurious. They were new to me, and a little tour on google revealed they’re generally formed from cream cheese or frosting and cake or cookie crumbs, dipped or rolled in other goodies. All no-bake. And they’re fun, the round shape ready to become sports balls, funny heads, bling, and in fact star pastry chef Buddy Valastro turned them into pretty eyeballs. And – no surprise – Amazon has whole books of them.      And now how about a shortcut? If you aren’t planning anything fancy with the balls, just pat the mixture into a pan and use the chocolate chips to make a ganache frosting, as seen here.  Like the richest ever brownie.      I don’t think I’m alone in appreciating the nutritional benefits of oatmeal without necessarily being a fan of its delivery method {eating it}, and accordingly the Salon has offered various add-in suggestions. My new favorite has a German chocolate cake vibe – after cooked, stir in coconut, pecans, chocolate chips, and brown sugar or maple syrup.

Shopping Finds – In our 06.25.21 Salon we featured Joanne Fluke’s foodie mystery novels, in turn the basis for a Hallmark series that we linked to in an earlier Salon. Now, what a nice find – her cookbook that reveals some of those recipes that teased us in the stories. Here it is on Amazon,  Joanne Fluke’s Lake Eden Cookbook.”        Well how fun is this. Could be for a get-together. Could be just so you’re always cooking in a partied-up kitchen. Food-themed balloons! Some are fun, some pretty, some downright appetizing. Note that you can find a specific food design – hamburger, pizza, ice cream, etc. – by entering it after “balloons” in the search window on the Amazon page. Many multi-packs too of food groupings, like the one shown here.

Featured Recipes –

Chicago Deep Dish Pizza Dip

A full 5 stars for this fun and festive mix of of thick spaghetti sauce mix, pepperoni, ricotta, mozzarella, and Parm, ready to be paired with the suggested garlic bread or baguettes. Or how about a baked pizza crust cut in strips. Now while I am pretty sure with its rating this is mega-tasty, and some seasonings would check in from the sauce, still not sure it lives up to the Chicago adjective. I can tell you what would would do that trick is some garlic, oregano and red pepper flakes, maybe a bit of basil and fennel too. From AllRecipes.

Shoyu Chicken

All the classic Asian flavors come together to beautifully bronzed chicken thighs that taste as good as they look. While the demo shows that the skin was left on, I did remove the skin and would say no harm done. From Food Network.

Chocolate Dipped Peanut Butter S’Mores

How much does that title telegraph a decadent promise? And it looks like it will definitely live up to it. Especially since there’s even more. Because Nutella and white almond bark also come to the party. More? Suggested toppings reach into pistachios, pretzels and sprinkles. From Food Network.

Stuffed Queso Meatloaf

Even non-meatloaf lovers may want to grab a fork. Crumbed corn tortillas, tomatoes, chili powder and cumin join the usual suspects in the meat mix. Then, soft cheese and jalapenos are channeled in, and a tomato/ketchup glaze goes on. Bake, wait, slice, yum. From Food Network.

31 No-Bake Desserts

Any “no-bakes” that look good I’ll be sending your way right here, so as little as possible see the oven {even as we may feel like we are}. These are from FoodFeed, and the sneaky petes draw you in right from the git-go with chocolate peanut butter bugle bars. 🎵

Have a cuppa in Alexa’s room – recipes & more

You don’t have to have an Amazon Echo Show to tap into the particular tidbits we’ve linked below, drawn from its vast culinary bounty.

Just pour a cup and let’s talk food with Alexa. Below are recipes recently displayed on the screen. Echo owners, also note that in many cases she guides you step by step through the prep . . .

Banana Bread Ice Cream Cake  What is it about bananas that they just excel at adding flavor, texture and moisture in so many ways to so many goodies. Here they’re mashed into a fairly classic banana bread, but after it’s baked the magic begins. Sliced into three the long way, it’s layered first with vanilla ice cream, then with chocolate, then frozen. The thing is, looking at the demo it seems it doesn’t come out like a brick but rather supple slices, spoon-ready. From Tasty.

Country Style Pork Ribs with Bourbon & Cola BBQ Sauce  In the slow cooker! In addition to the title ingredients, the sauce gains even more flavor from ketchup, tomato paste, garlic, brown sugar, Wooster, chili powder, cayenne, vinegar and syrup. From Epicurious.

Berry Smoothie Bowl  Take a sip of summer. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and bananas whirl into yogurt, almond milk and peanut butter. The recipe serves two so can go into a couple of glasses or maybe be the destination for two straws. Or, apply a multiplier and voila . . . summer punch. From Tasty.

The gins of summer  After sacrificing on our behalf and taste-testing 65 gins, writer Ray Isle offers these nine selections for cocktails on the patio. He never quite says quite why he chose this lineup, but we do get clues from his descriptions, which speak of lemon, lime, orange, florals, mint, even seaweed. From Food & Wine.

Fresh Summer Appetizers  This lineup is a happy matchup for warm weather snacking, pretty much utensil-free and seasonally inspired. Think mini savory pancakes, little pizzas, stuffed veggies, quesadillas, nachos, dips and lots more. Shown, the mini corn cakes with smoked salmon and dill creme fraiche {shortcuts & subs – store-bought cornbread or muffins, sour cream, dried dill}.  From MyRecipes.

Bloody Mary Bar  One of my absolute favorite brunch places featured a bloody mary bar that looked a mile long. Such fun! On a nice site I found and will visit again is a great diy array of tasty stuff to mix in, dip in, or prop atop the marys. In addition to the bar checklist, you’ll also find “The Best Bloody Mary Recipe.” The site is FoodieCrush.

New Salon every Friday – c’mon in

CS friends, and help yourself to tasty resources

Hosted by Barbara J Nosek

  Let’s chat   ‘

Kitchen Talk – So, I sent my new Ninja blender on it’s maiden voyage with homemade hummus. Love this stuff but was curious about other uses. Bon Appetit at our service with 10 Things to Do With Hummus, from burgers to casseroles to noodles. Btw, this blender is like a captured tornado. I’ve linked the whole page of them below.       I remember one time years ago when my mom was going to make hamburgers, but discovered we had only hot dogs buns. Well, she just patted that ground beef into flattened oblongs and, problem solved. Now though there’s a different way to make that matchup, even if in reverse – round hotdogs! See ’em here, where Food & Wine tells all.        I did not know what gram flour was, so thanks google for teaching me it’s chickpea flour, common in Indian cooking. If you didn’t know, yay, now you do too.

♦  ♦  ♦

Shopping Finds – I recently came across this really stylish herb saver {savor} from Prepara. Looked on Amazon to see if they made companion pieces too and Voila! But not just more stuff from Prepara but other makers with other items in similar cool designs. Shown are just two of the many possibilities. See the whole page here.        Last Feb we talked about a condiment that has chef and celeb enthusiasts, logo clothing, a fanzine, facebook appreciation page and a global presence. Laoganma’s Spicy Chili Crisp is amped up chili in oil that I’ve finally tried for myself. Definitely crisp, a little funky, a lot tasty – purists might cringe but I like it mixed with cream cheese, sour cream, or ranch dressing – and yes, I’d say deserving of all that adoration. {Yikes, want some right now} You can see their lineup on Amazon.

One of the items on our Chefs, Food, Cooking DVDs page – Can’t get enough of “Diners, Drive-in & Dives”? Or know someone who’s a big fan? There are seasons, seasons, seasons, of Fieri’s hit show on DVD on Amazon. You can also access links to videos of celeb chefs, top rated shows and food-themed movies on our page.

Featured Recipes

Ice Cream Pie with easy caramel sauce

A cool summer treat with a favorite sweet flavor on top. But wait, there’s more. What the title doesn’t tell you is that peanut butter cups and chocolate covered peanut butter crunch bars are chunked into the ice cream. Yum! From Food Network.

Easiest Ever Biscuits

You may well have a recipe that disputes this claim. But I will say they are easy, and they may also add the possible tag of tastiest ever because they really are good. Also there are two quite interesting techniques here, one regarding the cream and the other having to do with the merger of measuring and shaping. The link takes you to a YouTube video from America’s Test Kitchen.

Pop Pop Sauce

OK, this was actually used to zip up grilled cauliflower, in a prep from Sunny Anderson on The Kitchen, and the link takes you to the full recipe. But I put the sauce in the spotlight because once you see it you’ll know immediately that this tasty blend can go a whole lot of places. Here, we actually used it as salad dressing. Note that it is quite zesty, and if you want could tame it down with less of the hot stuff or cool it down with ranch and/or sour cream. From Food Network.

Mounds Bar-like Brownies

{OK, so they didn’t use the -like, but I rather not have a lawyer visit} Did you ever want to eat a video. Mercy, in goes, along with the staples, chopped chocolate, butter, cocoa, vanilla and the three eggs for moist chewiness. Then the mid layer including butter, powdered sugar, condensed milk and shredded coconut. On top – what else – a thick layer of ganache. From Tastemade.

Creamy Cucumber Salad

Does this sound like COOL in a bowl. And the refreshment values go well beyond the title. Those cukes are joined by sweet onion, fresh dill, and fresh chives, and then for tasty tang, rice wine vinegar and sour cream. From MyRecipes.

5-ingredient slow cooker recipes

And woohoo, some call for even fewer. The tasty lineup features lots of entrees, think classic pot roast, to a couple of side dishes, a delectable lemon bar cake and even tea. Great way to keep the kitchen cool and still enjoy hearty meals that are easy on the ingredient lists. From Southern Living via Food Feed.

Just pour a cup and let’s talk food with Alexa. Below are recipes recently displayed on the screen. Echo owners, also note that in many cases she guides you step by step through the prep . . .

Chicken Pot Pie Biscuits  What a boffo idea. Chicken is cooked in well seasoned broth which become gravy and joins with the chicken along with potatoes and peas to become a filling for puff pastry biscuits. Can you say, Satisfying. Video. From Tastemade.

Peanut Butter Banana French Toast Skillet  This dish is kind of like French toast meets bread pudding. And as if there weren’t already enough good stuff, what the title doesn’t tell you is there’s also a caramely vibe in the sauce – which is topped with sliced bananas and the seasoned eggy bread pieces, baked in the skillet, then cut into saucy wedges.  That’ll get ’em out of bed. From Tasty.

Diablo Diablo Diablo Burger  And in addition to the three Diablos from two sauces and a cheese, might also get a tingle from the green chilies and some zip from the nacho dip. There’s black pepper too but this point it’s wearing a wimpy sign. That dip, btw, is subject to an interesting technique that leads to a melty surprise inside the burger.  From Food Network, thanks to Sunny Anderson

Sundowner snacks, drinks, talk – whether for a crew, or for two, or just for you

A recent issue of Eating Well featured Zero Proof Sips, calling them beverages that “have all the grown up flavor you’re looking for.” The article is also posted on their website with the title “The Best Non-Alcoholic Drinks You Can Buy Online, According to Our Editors.”

Yikes, this looks good, and probably tastes even better. The title, Tomato and Bacon Flatbread, tells you where the flavor starts, but then it’s boosted by shallots, garlic, and mozzarella. Fresh greens go on top, pizza dough is on the bottom. Cut into small wedges, what a pretty addition to the snack table.

America’s Test Kitchen’s first ever cocktail book {published in 2019}, How to Cocktail. is on a pretty darn good discount for both hardcover and kindle at Amazon. And true to test kitchen protocol it promises, “After rigorous recipe testing, we’re able to reveal not only the ideal ingredient proportions and best mixing technique for each drink” but also how to make big batches, plus your own tonic, liqueurs, vermouths, and cocktail cherries, wrapping up with a snack section.
